5 in taxi die in crash with semi, tanker

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A fiery collision involving a fuel tanker, a semitrailer truck and a taxi killed all five people in the taxi and shut down Interstate 95 for hours, officials said Tuesday.
Although flames gutted the taxi and one of the truck engines, the fuel tanker did not burn.
The accident happened shortly after 11 a.m. on the main commuter route between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Both directions of I-95 were reopened by the evening rush hour, with the Florida Highway Patrol reporting traffic backed up for miles.
The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office was trying to identify the victims, trapped as the taxi burned to a shell under the semitrailer truck, said Todd LeDuc, a spokesman for Broward Fire and Rescue.
FHP spokesman John Bagnardi said it appeared all were adults.
The tanker's cab also burned, but its tank did not, LeDuc said. Both truck drivers escaped injury.
The blaze was brought under control before noon, LeDuc said.
