By JOHN BALZ, JACKIE RIPLEY Live Oak begins clearing land for 1,600 homesLIVE OAK -- Construction crews are clearing land in Live Oak, the 1,285-acre community in northern Hillsborough County. Developers plan to build almost 1,600 homes on the property. The first batch will go on sale by March, said Dan Ward, a spokesman for Live Oak. Live Oak, which abuts Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, will also include 175,000 square feet of commercial space. Rotarians define giving with dictionary projectNEW TAMPA -- The New Tampa Rotary Club began handing out 795 dictionaries to local elementary schools this week. As part of the "Dictionaries for 5th graders Program," club members donated dictionaries to six schools, including Chiles, Pride, Clark and Tampa Palms elementary schools. Area Rotary clubs have set a goal of giving a dictionary to each of the more than 23,000 fifth-graders in West Central Florida. New leader hopes to jolt Town 'N Country AllianceTOWN 'N COUNTRY -- Fawn Ridge resident Ed Crawford has been tapped to head the Town 'N Country Alliance, an umbrella group of civic and homeowners associations, schools, churches and businesses. Crawford replaces outgoing chairwoman Joyce Smith. "I see the alliance as a market place for the exchange of ideas happening in the community," Crawford said. "I'm interested in getting back to that again and will be spending a lot of time on the phone trying to get everybody reinvigorated." Other goals for the new year include the group's continued participation in the Town 'N Country Community Plan, the Upper Tampa Bay Trail project and traffic calming. Other new officers are Carlton Lewis Jr., vice chairman; Pam Prysner, secretary; Laura Vickers, treasurer; and Bill Rose and Joyce Smith, directors.
