Wharton boys golfers' 600 score wins them 4th place in state finals

They played well, but not well enough.

At least not by their standards. Still, after a couple of solid rounds the Wharton boys golf team ended their season in fourth place at the state finals at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie.

Wharton shot 299-301 to finish with a 600 score, 23 shots behind winner Miami Columbus. The Wildcats, despite their 299 were in 10th place after the first day. However, a second-day charge helped Wharton move up in the standings.

Patrick Gibson led Wharton with a 73. Les Baron, Mike Giammaresi and David Tiffenberg each shot 76. Barrett White struggled a bit, shooting an 83 a day after leading his squad with a 73.

CROSS COUNTRY: Several boys and girls teams were scheduled to compete in regional meets this weekend. The Leto and Wharton boys and Gaither and Wharton girls are running at the Class 4A, Region 2 meet in Orlando. Also, the Sickles girls and boys were to compete at the Class 3A, Region 3 meet in Belleview.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Standout Leto softball player Jessica Shepherd has signed to play at Florida Southern and Chamberlain player Missy Zick has signed with the University of Florida. Sickles volleyball player Jennifer Vance has signed with the University of Miami.
