Change of heart clears way for Hampton deal

©Associated Press
November 17, 2002

Catcher Charles Johnson reversed himself and approved a trade to the Rockies, allowing for a six-player deal sending left-hander Mike Hampton to the Marlins.

Hampton might not stay in Florida for long. The Associated Press reported that Florida was working on a deal that would send Hampton to the Braves.

That probably would end Atlanta's interest in re-signing free-agent lefty Tom Glavine.

Johnson, who had used his no-trade rights to block the deal earlier Saturday, changed his mind after getting $1-million to make up for the fact there is no state income tax in Florida.

LIDLE DEALT: Oakland traded former Rays right-hander Cory Lidle to the Blue Jays for two minor-leaguers. Lidle was the No. 4 starter in the A's rotation the past two seasons.

JAPAN SERIES: Behind Bernie Williams and Barry Bonds, the major-leaguers beat Japan 12-7 to tie the series at 3.

YANKEES: The team signed an agreement that will establish scouting and marketing ties with the Yomiuri Giants, Japan's most popular and successful team.
