Father, 20, accused of fracturing infant son's ribs, breaking his leg

CLEARWATER -- A man has been arrested on suspicion he broke his 9-month-old son's left leg and fractured 14 of the baby's ribs after he became upset at the child's mother. Gerald J. Williams, 20, was arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated child abuse. He was being held at the Pinellas County Jail Tuesday without bail. Williams is accused of picking up the baby, who weighs just over 17 pounds, and squeezing him hard enough to break the ribs, according to an arrest affidavit written by Pinellas sheriff's detective Matt Miller. The squeezing also caused lacerations to the child's liver and kidney, and broke the child's leg, the affidavit states. The abuse occurred on Oct. 21 at Williams' residence, 1003 Pennsylvania Ave. in Clearwater. Williams became upset after an argument with the boy's mother about transportation for visitation, sheriff's officials said. The child's mother reported the boy's injuries. Williams later admitted to the abuse, the arrest affidavit states. The child spent some time in the hospital, but is now fine, sheriff's officials said.

Victim of Monday stabbing identified as Clearwater man

CLEARWATER -- Police have identified a man stabbed Monday night as 39-year-old David S. Taylor, of Clearwater. Taylor told police he was walking in the 600 block of N Garden Avenue when two males, possibly teens, pushed him to the ground. He offered them money, but they didn't take it and stabbed him in the back, police said. Taylor was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg, where he was listed in good condition Tuesday afternoon. No arrests were reported.
