Theater group looks forward

NEW TAMPA -- With their debut season coming to a close and a 2002 holiday show in the works, organizers with the New Tampa Players are preparing for their 2003 schedule.

The community theater group plans to host a number of workshops, establish its youth division and perform three shows next year.

"We are going to open with a comedy called Radio TBS (Trailer park Broadcasting System)," said Doug Wall, artistic director for the New Tampa Players. "It is a hysterical comedy about a radio station in a trailer park based in the outskirts of Florida. We'll be performing at Benito Middle School at the end of February and the beginning of March."

NTP Jr., the group's newly launched youth division, will see more stage time in the season's second production, How to Eat Like A Child.

"It's a youth musical with 15 to 20 vignettes of growing up, from waiting for your mother to pick you up from school ... to are we there yet? It is extremely well written," Wall said.

The Players also will offer a series of auditioning and acting workshops next year.

A weeklong Broadway theater camp for kids is set for June 16-20. Participants in grades 7-12 will perform a full Broadway show. A Broadway director and composer will be brought in to offer lessons on musical theater.

A Broadway musical called Is There Life After High School? will be performed at the Hunter's Green and Tampa Palms country clubs in the fall.

"We've got a full slate," said Wall. "Things are going great."

The group's final 2002 show, a youth piece titled December Nights, December Lights & A Holiday to Remember, will be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 and 3 p.m. Dec. 15 at Grace Episcopal Church.
