In bloom for the holidays

The turkey isn't the only thing that has to look good on Thursday. So does your home.

Whether guests are coming or it's just the family gathered around the table, it's a day to make the house look special.

We asked some floral designers and talented nonprofessionals to share their ideas for Thanksgiving floral displays. Here and in our Garden section, we show you how to dress up your front door; create a display using fruits and vegetables; design a stunning centerpiece; and pump up that little chrysanthemum that you grab as a hostess gift en route to someone else's house for dinner.

And since Thanksgiving is so late this year, we offer a suggestion for a transitional arrangement that takes you from "thanks" to "giving."

Hollow out a pumpkin and set a button mum inside. Twine wild grapevine and raffia around and over it. Tuck in some silk leaves, add tiny pumpkins, bittersweet, ears of corn and a few votive candles. Time: About an hour, including hollowing out the pumpkin. Cost: pumpkin, $3; button mum, $1.99; raffia, $1.99 a package; leaves, $3 a package. Creator Cellia Plummer found the grapevine growing in her yard.

Hot-glue moss to the outside of a terra-cotta pot, then glue stalks of wheat vertically around the pot and stand a daisy mum inside. Tuck a few silk leaves into the wheat; if you've got some sparkly thread around, weave it through the flowers. Time: An hour to an hour and a half. Cost: mum, $5; pot, $1.69; wheat, $1.99; moss, $3.99 a package; leaves, $3.99 a package.

Take a length of curly ribbon long enough to tie around the chrysanthemum's pot. Then tie ribbon in various lengths and colors to that length of ribbon so they dangle vertically. Hot-glue a few silk leaves to some of the ribbons. Creator Cellia Plummer ties this "necklace'' around the rim of the pot and fluffs the ribbons out on the table. Time: 30 minutes or less. Cost: Chrysanthemum, $5; ribbon, $2.99; silk leaves, $3.99 a package.

Cellia Plummer created a floral "pick'' out of a branch from her yard, to which she hot-glued bark and twigs, a berry pick, silk leaves, a couple of tiny bird's nests and a bird. She tucks this into a daisy mum just as it came from the supermarket. Time: 30-45 minutes. Cost: Mum, $5; nests and bird, about $2; leaves, $3; she had the berry pick.
