Gym for kids almost ready for business

WEST MEADOWS -- A West Meadows couple is putting the finishes touches on a kids-only gym facility in New Tampa to open next month.

Fyt Kids Gym will offer programs for children age 18 months to 8 years. The programs, based on gymnastics, are designed to increase strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity.

"There are tremendous motor skills to learn with gymnastics," said owner Julie Hankins, who has coached gymnastics since she was 15. "Turning, jumping, hopping, it gives children an opportunity to go into any sport."

Fyt Kids' equipment will include bars, a balance beam, a rock climbing wall and a trampoline.

HUNTER'S GREEN -- Construction crews are expected to begin widening the intersection of Cross Creek Boulevard and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard this week, according to the city of Tampa's Transportation Department.

Crews will add an additional eastbound lane on New Tampa Boulevard, a westbound left turn lane on Cross Creek and a right lane on northbound Bruce B. Downs.

The city is paying about $400,000 for the project. Crews should complete the improvements within three months.
