Results of regional swim competitions
By ROD GIPSON Several area swimmers made big splashes during last week's regional swim meets. Chamberlain's Grant Nelson is headed to the state meet after winning the 200- and 500-freestyle events at the Class 3A, District 5 meet. A junior, Nelson swam the 200 in 1:45.47 and the 500 in 4:38.67. Also, Gaither senior Meredith Lynch placed third in the 200 free (1:58.19) and swam legs on two qualifying relay teams. The Cowboys' 200 free relay team, with Lynch, Katie Hart, Natalie Davis and Carly Cavalieri, finished third (1:46.37). A 400 free relay team with Lynch, Davis, Cavalieri and Valerie Crovo was second (3:51.75). Wharton sophomore Audrey Prior earned a trip south with second in the 100 backstroke. Gaither's boys finished fifth with 171 points, and the girls were fourth with 234. The Wharton girls placed sixth. In the Class 2A, District 7 meet, the Sickles boys placed second behind Northeast. Alonso was ninth, Jefferson was tenth and Freedom was 12th. On the girls side, Sickles was fourth behind the outstanding showing of junior Becky Bird. Freedom placed ninth and Jefferson was 11th. Bird won the 500-freestyle with 5:12.26, and she placed second in the 200-freestyle. She also was part of the Gryphons' 200-free (second place) and 400-free (third place) relay teams. The state swim meets is this weekend at the Hall of Fame Aquatic Center in Fort Lauderdale. CROSS COUNTRY: Both the Leto boys and the Gaither girls qualified for the state finals this weekend at the Ed Radice Sports Complex. Leto, led by Coe Fedorenko's individual win, placed fourth in Class 4A, Region 2. Meanwhile, a second-place individual from freshman Amanda Quick helped the Gaither girls claim the sixth-place team spot. Fedorenko finished with 16:06 to earn the individual region title, while Quick was seven seconds out of first place, running second at 18:40. SOCCER: The boys and girls soccer seasons kicked off last week with both Gaither squads showing their usual dominance. The Cowboys posted twin 8-0 victories against Robinson. Also, the Chamberlain boys used a late goal to defeat Alonso 3-2. In girls opening week action, Chamberlain and Alonso tied 1-1 and Sickles defeated Leto 4-0. GIRLS GOLF: Former Chamberlain standout Mallory Code has signed with the University of Florida. Code, who helped Chamberlain to state titles in 1999 and 2000, did not play this past season so she could focus on American Junior Golf Association events. Code will join her sister Whitney, a sophomore golfer for the Gators. Mallory is the 14th-ranked girls junior golfer by Golfweek magazine. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
