MAIL THEFTS IN LUTZ: After watching two women in a black Nissan pull up to his mailbox Tuesday morning and remove his outgoing mail, Paul Haenlein began to follow them.

"Most of it was instinct," said the 33-year-old father of three. "I just did it because I get involved."

Haenlein jumped into his 2000 Toyota Tundra and cruised behind the women as they drove down Ridge Hollow Lane. After a block, the women picked up speed. Haenlein phoned Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies for help.

He and the women traveled north on Livingston Street, then headed east on County Line Road to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. The women then jumped on Interstate 75 south and exited off E Fowler Avenue.

Haenlein said he struggled to keep up with the Nissan as they dodged cars heading west. The chase ended abruptly when deputies blocked the women's vehicle at 109 Avenue and N 22nd Street.

Britainy Paige Townsel, 28, of 9618 Hidden Oaks Circle, and Tiffany Diane Williams, 20, of 18638 San Rio Circle, were charged with petty theft and credit card theft. Townsel also was charged with forgery.

GENSHAFT COULD GET BOOST IN PAY: With university presidents around the state getting eyebrow-raising pay increases, the University of South Florida board of trustees is preparing to offer president Judy Genshaft a significant salary boost. How much is unclear, but it could be in the $50,000 range. That is expected to be resolved next month.

On Thursday, the trustees heard from a national consultant who said Genshaft's pay is way below the market rate.

"I believe she is not only one of the best presidents in the state, but in the nation," trustee Steve Burton said. He said he would wait to see what is recommended by a committee studying the issue, and then "if it's not high enough, then I'll speak up."

Genshaft, who lives in Tampa Palms, has been at USF for two years and makes $237,800. The University of Central Florida's board of trustees voted Thursday to make UCF president John Hitt the highest-paid president in the state university system, with an annual salary of $295,000. Florida State University and Florida International University pay their presidents about $285,000. Florida A&M, a much smaller institution, pays its new president $275,000. Many presidents also get a housing allowance.

Some board members give her high marks for handling controversies that include a bid for greater autonomy at the St. Petersburg campus, lawsuits over alleged racism in the USF women's basketball program, and the proposed firing of professor Sami Al-Arian, who has been accused of having ties to terrorists.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT KILLS NORTHDALE TEEN: A 19-year-old man was killed Tuesday evening when his motorcycle collided with a truck, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

Clayton Hester of 3401 North Lakeview Drive, Apartment 613, died at the scene. The accident occurred at 6:12 p.m. at W Fletcher Avenue and Greentree Drive.

Deputies said Hester was traveling west on Fletcher on his 2001 Suzuki motorcycle when Lee Sullivan, 48, attempted to turn onto Fletcher. Hester saw the 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck enter his path and laid the left side of his motorcycle down, deputies said. The motorcycle skidded and hit the left side of the pickup truck.
