Citrus Slices
By Times staff writers AmeriCorps tributes and poky lightsEveryone's been there: It's late. No cars are in sight. But you're idling at a red light because the traffic signal is on a timer instead of a sensor. County Commissioner Roger Batchelor took up the cause last Tuesday of frustrated nocturnal motorists, complaining to an official from the state Department of Transportation about the signal at State Road 44 and Turkey Oak Drive. "Sometimes I'm stuck there at night and there's no one there," Batchelor said. What to do? Commissioner Josh Wooten offered a low-tech solution, cheaper than adding a sensor. "Commissioner, I would just run that," Wooten said. * * * SERVE . . . OR ELSE: During the recent AmeriCorps Citrus Reads graduation and induction ceremony, program coordinator Dana Magill smiled at her AmeriCorps members and told them they were candles and mirrors of professionalism. They shined with an inner glow and reflected the promise and goodness around them. "You glow, AmeriCorps members, you glow," she said. "Serve our children well and I'll let you live." * * * CAN YOU GIVE A GUY A BREAK? During that same event, held at the Historic Courthouse, the executive director of Volunteer Florida Florida Commission on Community Service, Fred Sanguiliano, was visiting from out of town. Sheriff Jeff Dawsy also attended. After telling the members how "totally awesome" they were, he turned to the crowd, looking for one individual in particular. "Is the sheriff still in the room?" Sanguiliano asked. "I had to park on the grass over there." * * * GIVE MY REGARDS TO INVERNESS: At the end of the program, which included musical selections performed by two AmeriCorps members, Magill made her closing remarks. She made a point of addressing the singers, Megan Smith and Holly Hampton, by name, imploring them not to leave her just yet. "Please don't leave AmeriCorps to go find Broadway," she said. -- Times staff writers Bridget Hall Grumet and Paulette Lash Ritchie contributed to this report.
