Woods takes early lead in Grand Slam of Golf

Tiger Woods wants to win every tournament, whether it is the Masters or an all-star event.

"I'm here to compete, there's no doubt about that," he said. "I'm here to win."

The Masters and U.S. Open champion shot 6-under 66 Tuesday in Poipu Beach, Hawaii, for a three-stroke lead over Justin Leonard in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Davis Love III and PGA Championship winner Rich Beem opened with 72 in the 36-hole event for the year's major champions.

With Woods winning two majors and British Open champion Ernie Els withdrawing, Love and Leonard gained invitations based on their finishes in the majors.

MORE GOLF: Augusta National expanded its qualification criteria for the Masters. The top 10, instead of top three, on the 2003 money list and top 50 in world rankings through the Players Championship will be eligible. ... The Tradition, one of senior golf's four major championships, will move from Scottsdale, Ariz., to Aloha, Ore., next year. ... Russia will host its first top-tier European PGA Tour event, the Russia Open Aug. 14-17, 2003, in Moscow.

BASEBALL: Mets outfielder Roger Cedeno was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Bradenton. The Florida Highway Patrol arrested Cedeno after he drifted into other lanes erratically around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Cedeno, 28, was released after posting $500 bond. A court date was set for Dec. 23. ... Pitcher Tom Glavine asked the Braves, Mets and Phillies to give him a $45-million, four-year contract. New York and Philadelphia offered three-year contracts and Atlanta proposed a two-year deal with a team option for 2005. ... The Cubs acquired catcher Paul Bako from Milwaukee for an unnamed player. ... Former Detroit manager Luis Pujols will be first-base coach for San Francisco, Montreal's Gene Glynn third-base coach and ex-Giants pitcher Mark Gardner bullpen coach. ... Left-handed reliever Kelly Wunsch agreed to a $575,000, one-year deal with the White Sox. ... Minnesota pitcher Joe Mays had surgery on a bone spur in his right elbow.

COLLEGES: South Florida's Genoa Griffin of Tampa is third among women collegiate sailors in the United States, according to Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association rankings. St. Petersburg's Kristen Herman is 24th. ... A former San Diego State track star pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of her boyfriend. Latoyonda Promise Mose, 23, said she plunged a kitchen knife in Allen Hardy's chest June 15 after he beat her.

AUTOS: Jaguar fired team director Niki Lauda. Ford vice president Richard Parry-Jones said the three-time Formula One champion lacked the "technical depth" to run the team. Jaguar finished seventh in the constructors' championship with a car that had consistent aerodynamic problems.

CYCLING: World champion Mario Cipollini of Italy received French magazine Velo's Golden Bike award, ending Lance Armstrong's three-year reign. Armstrong was second in the poll of cycling writers from 17 countries.

TENNIS: Yevgeny Kafelnikov will have a varicose vein removed in his leg Dec. 2 after he plays for Russia against defending champ France in the Davis Cup final.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Iran's Hossein Reza Zadeh set a world record, lifting 580 pounds in the clean and jerk at the World Championships in Warsaw, Poland. He topped the 1998 mark of 579 pounds.
