Temple scares K-State before coming up short

STANFORD, Calif. -- Nicole Ohlde had a season-high 28 points and 15 rebounds as second-ranked Kansas State rallied for a 72-65 victory Friday against Temple in the first round of the Stanford Invitational.

Megan Mahoney, who had 13 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, made a short jumper with 3:29 left during a 10-0 run to give the Wildcats their first lead of the second half at 62-61.

Wecker made a 3-pointer a minute later, and Kansas State began to pull away.

"Temple is aggressive at both ends of the court," Wildcats coach Deb Patterson said. "That's as tough a defensive team as we'll line up against. Down the stretch, it just took us awhile to have an answer."

The Wildcats entered the game fresh off their Preseason NIT championship, in which they won by an average of 17 points and earned their highest ranking ever.

Toni Belafonte made a short jumper early in the second half to give Temple a 41-40 lead. The Owls maintained their lead in part because Kansas State missed 12 of its first 15 shots during the half.

No.1 Duke pulls away

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Alana Beard scored 28 as the Blue Devils recovered from a slow start to defeat Old Dominion 65-52 in the Paradise Jam.

Up 37-30, Duke went scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half, but the Monarchs managed just two points during that span. Duke finally took control with a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 46-32.

NO. 3 LSU 87, WASH. ST. 50: The Tigers used two strong runs to beat the Cougars in the Thanksgiving Classic in Miami. LSU led 30-27 late in the first half when DeTrina White scored eight during a 13-2 run. LSU then scored the first eight of the second half.

White, who scored her 1,000th point during the first half, was 7-of-11 from the field and had five rebounds.

NO. 4 TENN. 136, P.R.-MAYAGUEZ 26: Gwen Jackson made all 14 of her shots and scored 28 for the Volunteers in the first round of the San Juan Shootout in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Tennessee led 69-14 at halftime then opened the second half by scoring 18 consecutive points.

NO. 6 PURDUE 93, TCU 74: Mary Jo Noon scored 23 and Erika Valek 19 as the host Boilermakers won the Travelers Classic. Purdue closed the first half with six consecutive points to lead 47-33 then opened the second half with a 12-1 run that made it 59-34.

NO. 10 NOTRE DAME 69, USC 57: The visiting Irish took advantage of the Trojans' shooting slump to pull out a victory. USC led 37-34 at halftime but made only one basket during the first 7:45 of the second half as Notre Dame took a 46-41 lead. USC shot 28 percent from the floor in the second half.

NO. 11 UNC 82, DePAUL 66: Reserve La'Tangela Atkinson scored 12 and led the Tar Heels with 10 rebounds and four assists in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. The Blue Demons made only 7 of 28 3-pointers and scored six in the final seven minutes to allow North Carolina to pull away.

NO. 14 MINN. 85, NEW ORLEANS 75: Lindsay Whalen scored 36 for the Gophers in the first round of the Air Force Classic. Down 55-46 early in the second half, Minnesota didn't take the lead until Janel McCarville's free throw with 11:04 left made it 56-55.

NO. 17 ARK. 78, HAMPTON 41: Shameka Christon, Rudy Vaden and Cara Wright scored 13 for the Razorbacks at the Paradise Jam. The Pirates shot 19 percent from the field in the first half (28 percent for the game) in falling behind 40-18.

NO. 18 BC 64, OREGON 47: Jessalyn Deveny had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Eagles in the Paradise Jam. Down 26-17 in the first half, the Ducks got within 35-32 with 15:41 left. But the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to seal it.

NO.23 OKLA. 90, FORDHAM 62: Maria Villarroel scored 30 for the Sooners in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic. Villarroel was 13-of-18 from the field, and Oklahoma shot 54 percent while making 20 of 27 free throws.

Seminoles improve to 3-1

TALLAHASSEE -- LaQuinta Neely, making her first start, scored a career-high 17 to lead Florida State to a 84-69 victory against Wright State.

"We're still working through some things," coach Sue Semrau said. "We are not where we want to be by any stretch, but a win is a win."

The Seminoles (3-1) used an 18-2 run to take a 40-24 first-half lead. After the Raiders made it 55-49 during the second half, a 9-0 run put the game away.
