Site Seeing
By JULES ALLEN Feel free to browse Here, it is the thought that countsI can't wait to see what manner of ugly gifts wing their way to the thrift shop this year. They'll pass through my house. I'll sigh and moan about what a fat waste of money they are. And nothing will change next year. Yes, I understand it's the thought that counts. But what if somebody could make a charitable contribution to a real organization that would benefit? This site lets you skip the hassle of buying an unwanted gift and lets your gift -- and money -- do some good. Order or chaos? Are you reading this at work? How does your desk look? Clean or tidy? Do you ever have a desk? I have three desks: a messy one of my own, a clean one for show and a third one that I'm told to fold up when the flying office is about to land. If you have a digital camera, snap a photo of yours and send it to this site for presentation. It's a strangely addictive vision of the mundane. I can't stop clicking the next button. Spaghetti serverTheRegister.co.uk/content/28/27684.html When you think of the place your e-mail and Web pages are stored, you think of some pristine space, right? The room is staffed with the clean, polished types wearing khaki pants and shiny shoes in most people's vision. Sadly, it's all an illusion. They're usually chubby, unshaven types like yours truly, and the room is often in disarray. Just to prove I'm not making it up, have a look at this lively article from sarcastic tech daily the Register. If you don't make your own backups and store them somewhere safe after reading and looking at the pictures, I've got some swamp land for you in South Florida. 555-TECHYou've always wanted your own 800 number with its own cool word combination. But you're just an individual and all of the really good 800 numbers are gone. That's why they introduced 888 numbers and other confusing prefixes, but that's a reflection of my lack of vision on the whole telecom thing. But you can keep your number and if you're really lucky you can have this site extract some interesting mnemonic phrase from it. I'm not one of the lucky ones. My main number has hardly any interesting vowels in the right places. But you could turn that nasty number into something instantly memorable. Watson (and where to go)The latest Mac OS X has Sherlock 3, a built-in Web services client that streamlines retrieving information from remote databases. What's great about it is that it's not the Web. Popup ads don't assault your eyes and other garbage is minimal. If you're hooked on Sherlock, you haven't lived until you've tried Watson. In a strange case of reverse identity, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters have been switched. Watson is the smarter of the two. While it will set you back $29, the sheer amount of information available is head and shoulders above what's searchable with Apple's Sherlock. Very well done.
