BROOKSVILLE -- An 18-year-old man was charged with child abuse Friday after he bit a baby on the face because the infant would not stop crying, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies said Daniel Kirkman of 6211 Zirkles Circle, southwest of Brooksville, cared for a 2-month-old baby on Nov. 24 while the baby's mother was at work.

Kirkman told authorities that the baby continued crying, despite attempts to soothe him. Kirkman said he was frustrated, sad and angry, so he bit the baby on the face. Someone reported Kirkman to a child abuse hotline, and authorities arrested him on Friday.

Deputy Irene Gomes said she saw a bruise on the baby's left cheek. The state Department of Children and Families will monitor the situation, authorities said.
