U.S. men will kick off season in Ft. Lauderdale

The U.S. men's soccer team, coming off its best World Cup since 1930, will open its 2003 schedule against Canada on Jan. 18 in Fort Lauderdale.

The Americans have played one full international game since a 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup quarterfinals, beating El Salvador 2-0 on Nov. 17 at Washington.

In their last meeting, on Jan. 30, the United States beat Canada 4-2 on penalty kicks.

The U.S. team will start training the first week of January in Bradenton.

The highlights of the American schedule next year are the FIFA Confederations Cup, to be played in France from June 18-29, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup from July 12-27. Foxboro, Mass., Miami and Washington are the most likely sites for the Gold Cup.

MORE SOCCER: FIFA president Sepp Blatter was cleared of any criminal conduct by prosecutors, who are closing their investigtion. Blatter had been accused of corruption and financial mismanagement, but the district prosecutors office said there were no grounds to charge the head of soccer's governing body. ... Bayer Leverkusen says it will decide next week whether to recall U.S. World Cup star Landon Donovan from the San Jose Earthquakes. Leverkusen owns Donovan's rights until 2007.

AUTO RACING: Deborah Renshaw will not ride with Rick Goodwin's Busch team next year after missing her first Busch start because of a crash in practice that killed a driver. Goodwin had planned to field a car for Renshaw starting in February at Daytona. Renshaw, who is recovering from a broken foot, would not elaborate on what prompted the decision.

BOXING: Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis took the witness stand and accused his former lawyer of helping a promoter who was "ripping me off." Lewis was the last witness in a Manhattan federal court trial, in which he's accusing lawyer Milton Chwasky of allowing promoter Panos Eliades to siphon money from Lewis' expense account. Lewis is seeking $7.5-million in damages.

COLLEGES: South Florida senior Fany Schaeffer was named Conference USA's golfer of the month for November. ... Krissi MacIntyre, Gretchen Naruta and Ania Ruiz of the University of Tampa, and Saint Leo's Cristiana Florea were named to the Daktronics volleyball All-South Region first team.

WINTER SPORTS: Olympic silver medalist Isolde Kostner of Italy crashed during training for a World Cup downhill race in Lake Louise, Alberta and was airlifted to a hospital. Kostner, the defending World Cup downhill champion, was listed in stable condition and doctors said she had symptoms consistent with a concussion. ... Didier Cuche of Switzerland edged American Daron Rahlves in the first downhill training run in Beaver Creek, Colo., in preparation for Saturday's race. American Bode Miller was ninth. ... Russia will try again to overturn the drug-related suspensions of Olympic cross-country skiers Larissa Lazutina and Olga Danilova.

SWIMMING: Ian Thorpe, who won 11 gold medals in 2002, was named swimmer of the year by Swimming World magazine, becoming the first four-time winner of the sport's most prestigious individual award.
