TAMPA -- Hillsborough school superintendent Earl Lennard has been named Florida's superintendent of the year.

The Florida Association of District School Superintendents gave Lennard the award Wednesday.

The announcement was made at the annual joint conference of the Florida School Boards Association being held through Friday at the Hyatt Regency Westshore.

Lennard is in his seventh year as superintendent of Hillsborough schools, the nation's 11th-largest school district.

He will now compete for the national superintendent of the year award from the American Association of School Administrators. The winner will be named Feb. 21 in New Orleans.

The Florida Association of School Administrators gave Lennard its "Lamp of Knowledge Award" in June 2001 for his outstanding contributions to public education.
