Numerous 'Nutcrackers'

It wouldn't be the holidays without a half-dozen productions of The Nutcracker, performed traditionally, with a hip-hop beat or on ice. There are two Nutcrackers to choose from this weekend, with more to come later in the month.

The Miami City Ballet and the Florida Orchestra bring Tchaikovsky's musical score with George Balanchine's choreography to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater at 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 to $38. (727) 791-7400.

The Ballet Society stages "Nutcracker in the Park" at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in North Straub Park on the St. Petersburg waterfront. The park opens at 3 p.m. for seating. The production is free to those sitting on blankets and $5 for grandstand seating. No lawn chairs allowed. (727) 827-3828.

Later this month:

The Chocolate Nutcracker, with students and professionals in a multicultural version of the traditional tale. 7 p.m. Dec. 13, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, $17. Also presented as part of the venue's Family Series for ages 5 to adult, 11 a.m. Dec. 14-15, $10. (727) 791-7400.

Holiday spirit front and center

A Red Ryder BB gun is the issue at hand in A Christmas Story, the stage adaptation of Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in 1940s Indiana. Emilia Sargent, who plays Mother, and Robert D. Mowry as the Old Man are in the American Stage production that opens Friday and continues through Dec. 22 (Dec. 19 show is sold out) at the Dollinger Center for the Arts, Canterbury School, 901 58th Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. $7-$15. An instrumental exploration

In The Living Roots of Music, Lauren Pelon ranges from ancient Greek works to 19th century ballads to contemporary compositions. Her performance features more than 25 instruments, including lute, hurdy-gurdy, lyre, recorder, krummhorn, pennywhistle, concertina, ocarina, bowed and plucked psalteries and Kiowa courting flute, as well as modern synthesizer. Pelon, who has appeared as a guest soloist with symphony orchestras and on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, plays all the instruments, sings and discusses music and its role in society. The program is at 8 p.m. Saturday at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center. Tickets: $11, $13. (727) 942-5605.
