"A Red, White & Blue Christmas' is this year's theme for the annual Crystal River event Saturday, which will honor American veterans.

There are enough parades and holiday music celebrations this weekend to get anyone into a festive holiday mood.

The Crystal River Christmas Parade gets under way at 6 p.m. Saturday along U.S. 19. The theme for the parade is "A Red, White & Blue Christmas", in honor of America's veterans.

The parade will feature nearly 85 entries. Marching bands from Lecanto High, Crystal River Middle and Hernando Elementary schools are scheduled to perform.

The parade route will begin at U.S. 19 and Citrus Avenue and proceed south on U.S. 19 toward Paradise Point Road, where the parade ends. Onlookers can watch the parade along the southbound lane of U.S. 19. The most popular spots are the shopping center parking lots along U.S. 19.

The grand marshals of the parade will be area veterans, who will be marching in a group.

A musical holiday weekend

The Playhouse 19 Christmas Special will be held Saturday and Sunday and again on Dec. 14 and 15 at the theater, 865 U.S. 19 S, Crystal River.

The musical performance will feature traditional and contemporary Christmas and holiday music, performed by a quartet of turn-of-the-century Christmas carolers, performing in a set resembling a city park.

Other highlights of the show include a reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Drew Sherman and instrumental excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker performed by Danielle Flury on piano.

Vangie Rich will read the inspirational letter "Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus" and Deborah Lyons will read selections from the poetry of Robert Frost.

Other singers include Richard Flury, Vangie Rich, Greg Wilker, Marsha Reiniers and Shirley Button. The musical will employ the theater's motorized stage, which rotates to display one of three sets, all designed by Nancy Morrison

Show times are 8 p.m. for the Saturday shows and 2 p.m. for the Sunday shows. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for those 14 and under. Call 563-1333.
