ST. AUGUSTINE -- The family of a Pennsylvania woman seriously injured when she was run over at a St. Augustine beach two years ago has accepted a $17.5-million settlement from the driver and his insurance company, an attorney said.
Megan Hamlin, now 19, was sunbathing with a friend at Anastasia State Recreation Area on June 20, 2000, when they were run over by a sport utility vehicle.
The friend, Jessica Rowen, required several reconstructive surgeries to fix numerous head injuries, but has made a near-complete recovery. Hamlin, who suffered severe brain trauma, is in what doctors call a vegetative state, unable to speak and requiring constant medical care.
Joseph B. Edmonson Jr., of Green Cove Springs pleaded no contest to careless driving in the case and was sentenced to a one-year license revocation, a $1,000 fine and 120 hours of community service.
He left the scene of the accident, saying afterward he did not know he struck the girls.
