TALLAHASSEE -- If you want to attend Gov. Jeb Bush's inaugural "Black Tie & Blue Jeans" ball, it'll cost you $100.

But the price of admission for all other inaugural events next month is one children's book.

Actually, the events are free, but Bush hopes everyone who attends will donate a children's book. His goal is to collect 10,000 books to give to Boys & Girls Clubs across Florida.

The book drive is part of the governor's second-term priority of getting every Florida child reading at grade level. To coincide with the holidays, the collection effort has been dubbed "Seasons Readings."

"If you believe in limited government, then reading needs to be your priority, because reading reduces the demands on government," Bush told his transition team reading committee Thursday.

The state has a list of recommended books on the transition section of its Web site, www.myflorida.com, that also links to Barnes & Noble's Web site.

Books can be donated directly to Boys and Girls Clubs or at the inaugural events.

The recommended books include Very Hungry Caterpillar for prekindergarteners, Where the Wild Things Are for elementary students, Charlotte's Web for middle schoolers and To Kill a Mockingbird for high schoolers.

The free events are a barbecue in Miami on Jan. 5, a prayer breakfast, the swearing-in ceremony, a Governor's Mansion open house and a carnival, all on Jan. 7 in Tallahassee.

The Black Tie & Blue Jeans ball is Jan. 6 in Tallahassee.
