BROOKSVILLE -- It was one thing to miss some of his youngest daughter's basketball games. It was quite another to miss every one of her volleyball matches.

That is why Pete Lahey decided to remain as Hernando girls basketball coach but stepped down as boys golf coach.

"Family comes first," said Lahey, who resigned at the end of the golf season.

Lahey's daughter, Brittany, 12, plays volleyball and basketball at West Hernando Middle School.

Lahey has been able to work his practice schedule around many of her basketball games, but golf coincided with her volleyball matches.

"I'm going to stick with basketball," Lahey said. "I love basketball, so I'm going to do that and my daughters come to games. I get to see some of (Brittany's) games, but not all of them."

Lahey, 55, coached golf for five seasons at Hernando, helping Fred Farmer to the state tournament in 2000, when the freshman tied for 62nd.

Hernando advanced to the region tournament this season, finishing seventh.

Lahey said he will miss watching his golfers grow as individuals and players.

"It really is nice to watch them grow that way and watch their game develop into better players," Lahey said. "I'll miss going out and watching them, and they always want you to watch them as they make good shots."

A replacement has not been named.
