Compiled from Times wires Cuban singer Cruz has emergency surgeryCuban singer Celia Cruz was in stable condition Friday after undergoing emergency surgery, her agent said. The two-time Latin Grammy winner, who lives in New Jersey, complained of ill health Wednesday night and was immediately hospitalized. Her agent, Omed Pardillo, said the reasons for the surgery, which took place early Thursday at New York Presbyterian Hospital, would be released after Cruz returns home. Bay News 9 hiring, shifting staffBay News 9 weekend anchor Jenny Dean will move to middays in January, replacing anchor Susan Casper, who is leaving the Pinellas Park-based cable newschannel to pursue other opportunities. Casper, who has appeared on the Time Warner-owned newschannel since its inception five years ago, is the cable channel's only black anchor and serves as president of the area's National Association of Black Journalists chapter. She told the St. Petersburg Times in September that she turned down an offer to stay at Bay News 9 in hopes of securing an anchor job in a bigger market. The cable newschannel also announced three new hires: Gina Maravilla will take Dean's place as weekend morning anchor, coming from KTVK-TV in Phoenix, Ariz.; meteorologist Juli Marquez joins the channel's weather team from KMTV in Omaha, Neb.; and Jason Lanning, a reporter coming from Rockford, Ill., will work as a video journalist, following stories in Hillsborough County. 'Roseanne,' 'Angel' actor dies of possible overdoseGlenn Quinn, best known for his recurring role on the sitcom Roseanne and a former co-star of the supernatural drama Angel, died Tuesday in North Hollywood. He was 32. The Dublin, Ireland-born Mr. Quinn was found dead from a possible drug overdose at a friend's home, Los Angeles police said Friday. Detectives said the case will remain open pending the completion of toxicology tests, but no foul play was suspected. Mr. Quinn joined the cast of Roseanne playing Becky Connor's boyfriend and then husband, Mark, from 1990 to 1997.
