Commissioner steps down to run for mayor

TARPON SPRINGS -- City Commissioner Beverley Billiris said goodbye to fellow board members Friday, hoping her absence will be a temporary one as she resigned to run for mayor in 2004.

"It's a sad day, but it's a day full of the energy to run for mayor," Billiris said at a special City Commission meeting Friday afternoon. Billiris said the city had become more beautiful, resident-friendly and financially responsible in her five years on the board. The commission itself, she said, is more civil and productive.

Term limits prevent Billiris from running unless she sits out for one year. The board appointed Commissioner Jim Archer mayor pro tempore in Billiris' place. He will also assume her role on certain committees. A new commissioner will be chosen at a special election Feb. 4. Four candidates -- Wayne Ekren, Spanos Harding, Peter Nehr and Roger Sellew -- have announced their intention to run for Billiris' seat. Voters will consider two land deals on the same ballot.
