Flaherty not likely to return

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Devil Rays have no plans to offer arbitration to John Flaherty by tonight's deadline, essentially cutting all ties to the veteran catcher.
By not offering arbitration, the Rays can't re-sign Flaherty, the only player left from the 1998 inaugural starting lineup, until May 1. They also give up the right to receive compensation if Flaherty signs with another team.
But the possibility that Flaherty would accept arbitration and end up with a salary close to the $3.25-million he received last season makes it too risky of a move.
Flaherty sounded Friday like he was ready to move on.
"I don't know what to expect," Flaherty said. "I would think they wouldn't offer arbitration, but we're waiting to hear. The teams we've been talking to are waiting too. I've been pleasantly surprised (by the interest level)."
Flaherty said he expects contract talks to start quickly once teams know they won't lose a draft pick if they sign him.
Shortstop Chris Gomez, who was released at the end of the season, is talking to the Yankees.
CARDINALS: Left-hander Jeff Fassero agreed to a one-year contract.
EXPOS: The players' association agreed to allow Montreal to move 22 home games to Puerto Rico, subject to an inspection of San Juan's Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
INDIANS: First baseman Travis Hafner and right-hander Aaron Myette were acquired from the Rangers for catcher Einar Diaz and right-hander Ryan Drese. ... Closer Bob Wickman had reconstructive elbow surgery and will miss next season.
MARINERS: First baseman John Olerud agreed to a two-year, $15.4-million contract.
REDS: Right-hander Jimmy Haynes agreed to a one-year deal.
WHITE SOX: Frank Thomas agreed to a one-year deal.
