SEMINOLE -- Pasco simply did not have the numbers to compete at the Hooters Classic on Saturday.
Of the seven Pirates who participated, only Gregg Vernon (112 pounds), Justin Craig (189) and Josh Lones (215) placed in the top four. Craig's first-place finish helped Pasco score 78 points, seventh among eight teams.
Countryside won the tournament title for the second year in a row. The Cougars, who had six of the tournament's 11 returning state qualifiers, scored 266 to beat runner-up Flagler Palm Coast (191).
Kent Costell (103), Vincent Scholl (119), A. Jay Hixon (125), Mike Flood (130), Dominic DeNunzio (135), Steve Spicuzza (140), Wes Walker (145) and Garry Dodds (160) won individual titles for the Cougars.
Flood was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. A third-place winner at state last season, Flood beat the bronze medalist from two seasons ago, Punta Gorda Charlotte's David Hoke, in the final at 130.
Other winners included Kissimmee Gateway's Christian Huaman (171), Charlotte's Matt Joiner (152) and Flagler Palm Coast's Cory Guidrey (112), Zack Tomlinson (215) and William Webber (275).
