Compiled from Times wires Hails from the chiefPresident Bush toasted actor Elizabeth Taylor, 70; singer Paul Simon, 61; and actor James Earl Jones, 71, Sunday for achievements in the performing arts. Actor-singer-dancer Chita Rivera, 69, and Metropolitan Opera conductor James Levine, 59, were also hailed at the White House reception that preceded the gala honoring them at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. "This year we've brought together in one room a legend of Broadway, the conductor of the Met, the composer of Mrs. Robinson, the face of Cleopatra and the voice of Darth Vader," said Bush. He said Taylor was the "very definition of acting talent and movie stardom." Of Jones he said: "People say that the voice of the president is the most easily recognized voice in America. Well, I'm not going to make that claim in the presence of James Earl Jones." The program airs Dec. 27 on CBS. Bond back on topThe James Bond film Die Another Day, which debuted as No. 1 two weeks ago, was back on top with $13-million this weekend, studios estimated Sunday. Analyze That had $11.3-million; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets went from first to third with $10-million.
