DAYTONA BEACH -- A Michigan man suspected of killing his girlfriend and kidnapping his children was arrested as he slept in his van at the beach, police said.

Patrick Michael Gleeson, 48, was found in his 1995 blue Ford Astrostar minivan after a tow truck driver recognized the vehicle from FBI public alerts and called authorities, police spokesman Sgt. Al Tolley said. A gun was in the van, but Gleeson was arrested late Saturday without incident.

The children were not at the scene, Tolley said.

Gleeson was being held without bond in the Volusia County jail until he is sent to Michigan or Illinois, jail officials said. A booking supervisor said Gleeson was represented by an attorney from the Volusia County public defender's office.

Gleeson was wanted on a Michigan charge of murder, a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and an Illinois warrant for child abduction.

Michigan police said Gleeson fatally shot Dena Fuglseth, 43, then hid her body in a cellar. Her body was found Nov. 29.

Police said Gleeson also failed to return his children to his ex-wife, Edna Smith of Dwight, Ill., who had legal custody of Ashley, 5, and Joshua, 3. The children's car seats were found at Fuglseth's home in Ottawa County's Park Township.

Smith pleaded with the public on Sunday for the safe return of her children.

"I'm just hopeful somebody's out there and they were taking care of them while he was running and they're going to take them to a local police department, hospital, anything," Smith said.

A tip led the FBI to think that Gleeson was staying at a hotel in Ormond Beach, north of Daytona Beach.
