Arkansas curtails its home slump

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Freshman Jonathon Modica scored 19 Tuesday as Arkansas beat Louisiana Tech 72-60, averting the Razorbacks' first three-game losing streak in Bud Walton Arena since the arena opened nine years ago.

Arkansas, which started four freshmen, couldn't shake the Bulldogs, who fell behind 58-46 with less than four minutes left but cut the lead to 61-54 with two minutes to go.

A Modica dunk with a minute remaining put the Razorbacks up 67-58. The Bulldogs turned to fouling Arkansas over the last minute in an effort to stage another run.

Freshmen Eric Ferguson and Kendrick Davis each added 16 points. Davis hit several 3-pointers in the second half to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Senior forward Antonio Meeking had 18 points for the Bulldogs, and senior guard Lavelle Felton contributed 16. Senior guard Darrian Brown scored 14 for the Bulldogs.

Arkansas' Bud Walton Arena opened for the 1993-94 season. In nine previous seasons the Razorbacks had never lost three in a row in their on-campus arena.

In the past 11/2 weeks, Arkansas lost in-state games to then-No. 22 Tulsa, Troy State and then-No. 25 Illinois, but the Illini loss was on a neutral court in North Little Rock.

DePAUL 73, OHIO 65: Delonte Holland had 22 points and Sam Hoskin added 20 for the host Blue Demons. DePaul went on an 11-0 first-half run that started on a Quemont Greer jumper to make it 16-10 and ended on a Joe Tulley 3-pointer to make it 25-10 with 4:04 left.

TCU 87, N. TEXAS 80: Junior Blount, Corey Santee and Bingo Merriex combined for 66 points for the visiting Horned Frogs. Blount scored 24, including four 3-pointers, and had four steals. Santee added 22 points and Merriex 20 for Texas Christian.
