TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State University moved a step closer Tuesday to finding out who will replace Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte as its president when a search committee narrowed the list of finalists to three.
The short list includes former Florida House Speaker T.K. Wetherell, former Ohio State and University of Wyoming president Edward Jennings, and Susan Prager, a law professor at UCLA.
The panel eliminated Robert V. Smith, provost and vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas, and University of Iowa provost Jon Whitmore.
The candidates will return to Tallahassee for extensive campus visits next week. The search panel will then make a recommendation to the Florida State board of trustees, which will recommend its choice to the Florida Board of Education.
Wetherell, 56, a Florida State graduate, enjoys strong support in the Legislature and among many alumni. Until recently he was a business partner with John Thrasher, the chairman of the selection committee.
Jennings, 65, taught at Eastern Michigan University, and the universities of Hawaii, Iowa, Wyoming and Ohio State. Prager, 60, is a former law school dean at UCLA, a former trustee at Stanford University and former provost at Dartmouth.
