Daily Fishing Report

Forecasts call for an unusual amount of rain for the next few months. The last time we had El Nino conditions, there was record precipitation in the bay area. While excessive rainfall can hamper many types of fishing, there are some situations in which it is helpful.

By now most snook moved inland. They often seek places where freshwater pours into the salt or brackish water such as spillways, drain pipes and dams. Heavy rains tumble small fish and minnows through these spots and dump them into saltier water. Snook will sit in the churning water to capitalize on the easy meals deposited there. Freshwater bass do the same thing in places where ditches and drain pipes empty into lakes or ponds.

Since most of these areas are accessible from land, artificial lures such as jigs and small-lipped plugs work best. When the fish feed in the runoffs, they are not picky about what they eat. Toss your lure into the slipping water and allow it to wash through. Give it a little action as it goes by, and if there are fish there, you will know soon.
