KU wins tug of war

TULSA, Okla. -- Kansas got back to basics to get back to its winning ways.

The 20th-ranked Jayhawks, who had lost three of their past four to tumble from No.2, outmuscled No.17 Tulsa on the inside and harassed the Golden Hurricane on the perimeter in an 89-80 victory Wednesday night.

Nick Collison had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Kansas. Wayne Simien and Keith Langford scored 19 each, and the Jayhawks forced 22 turnovers to hand Tulsa its first loss.

"They were just more aggressive, hustled, got every loose ball and just beat us in the second half," Tulsa coach John Phillips said. "They were just tougher than we were tonight."

Kevin Johnson was outstanding for Tulsa despite foul trouble, with 23 points and six rebounds.

Kansas coach Roy Williams has been frustrated by his team's lack of patience on offense, but the Jayhawks improved in that area.

"I liked the unselfishness and patience we had in the second half," he said. "I wanted us to still attack but be patient, and I think we did."

MICHIGAN 83, BOWLING GREEN 57: Daniel Horton scored a career-high 26 and the host Wolverines got their first win.

WISCONSIN 85, N. HAMPSHIRE 36: Freddie Owens scored 17 on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the host Badgers. Wisconsin forced 25 turnovers.

TEMPLE 65, PENN ST. 63: Alex Wesby scored 19 and David Hawkins hit two free throws with 7.1 seconds left for the visiting Owls, who played without coach John Chaney. He was released from the hospital after being admitted Sunday with pneumonia.

RUTGERS 94, FORDHAM 83: Jerome Coleman scored a career-high 34 and the host Knights had their best scoring night in four years.

ST. JOHN'S 80, ST. FRANCIS, N.Y. 58: Marcus Hatten scored 29 as the host Red Storm marked the return of coach Mike Jarvis by staying unbeaten. Jarvis missed one game because of the death of his brother.

KANSAS ST. 102, TEXAS PAN-AMERICAN 68: Jarrett Hart scored a career-high 19 to lead the host Wildcats. Kansas State shot 61 percent from the field -- the team's best mark since 1997.

COLORADO 80, CHICAGO ST. 61: Michel Morandais scored 21 for the host Buffaloes. Chicago St. hit 1-of-6 3-pointers and got no closer than 15.

BAYLOR 79, LA.-MONROE 74: John Lucas scored 18 and Lawrence Roberts added 17 and 13 rebounds to lead the host Bears.

BYU 64, SAN DIEGO 49: Travis Hansen scored 17 to give the Cougars the nation's longest home winning streak with 38.

COLORADO ST. 96, DENVER 80: Matt Nelson had 20 points and 10 assists and Brian Greene added 19 points for the host Rams.

USC 78, CAL ST.-FULLERTON 63: Rory O'Neil scored a career-high 22 and the host Trojans snapped a two-game losing streak.

ARIZONA: Forward Luke Walton probably will miss Sunday's game after reinjuring his right ankle during Monday's practice.

ILLINOIS: Coach Bill Self received a three-year extension through the 2007-08 season. Self will be paid a base salary of $900,000 per year and a $550,000 bonus if he stays for the duration.

PENN STATE: Jamaal Tate has taken a leave of absence, citing nagging health problems. The university said that Tate also was suffering from chronic fatigue.
