Mitchell whips Pasco 8-1

TRINITY -- Pasco coach Keith Sumner reminded his team that Mitchell had never beaten the Pirates in four previous meetings.

The speech worked for about two minutes, because as Mustangs go, this year's team is a new make and model.

Mike McDevitt took Jarrod Madonna's corner kick in the air and found the left corner of the net, sparking Mitchell to an 8-1 victory Wednesday.

Mitchell, which went winless its first season and won four games last year, improved to 3-5-1, continuing an emergence that coach Pio Rizzo said comes from a greater familiarity among his players.

"Soccer's a sport you have to play together, and that means a lot," said Rizzo, pleased with five first-half goals after his team mustered one in its last three games.

Wednesday's surprise star was senior Ryan Krebser, who scored a hat trick off the bench, matching his scoring output from the first eight games. McDevitt had two goals, and fellow junior Ryan Villiard had a goal and two assists.

Bill Chapman had a strong night in goal, stopping eight shots by Pasco (1-5-2), the lone exception coming on Kyle Hobbs' second goal of the season late in the first half.
