TALLAHASSEE -- Attorney General-elect Charlie Crist named key members of his management team Thursday, keeping some of Bob Butterworth's top staff and bringing in some new faces from the Department of Education.
George S. LeMieux, a 33-year-old Fort Lauderdale lawyer with the firm of Gunster Yoakley, will be Crist's top deputy and chief of staff. LeMieux is chairman of the Broward County Republican Party, a job he will give up. A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and magna cum laude graduate of Emory University, LeMieux is considered a top-flight commercial litigator.
LeMieux was an unsuccessful candidate for the state House in 1998. In that race, he showed a prescience for issues that would strike a chord with voters. Campaign brochures described him as "the leader we need to reduce classroom size," four years before voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring smaller classes.
Crist, who is leaving the office of state education commissioner, said he is assembling an experienced, diverse team:
It includes Patricia R. Gleason, reappointed general counsel specializing in Florida's Government in the Sunshine Law; Kent J. Perez, reappointed chief Cabinet aide; Carolyn Snurkowski, reappointed director of criminal appeals; Betsy Seidel, named senior executive assistant; Melinda M. Miguel, appointed inspector general; Allison K. Bethel, reappointed director of civil rights; JoAnn Carrin, appointed director of communications; Jerry L. McDaniel, administrative services and information systems head; and Robert J. Sparks, director of external affairs.
