City approves contractor crackdown
By JENNIFER GOLDBLATT, Times Staff Writer
NEW PORT RICHEY -- City Council members on Tuesday night approved in a 4-1 vote an ordinance that would require contractors who do work in the city to post their names and registration numbers on their vehicles. The ID would be required to be in a prominent place on both sides of the vehicle. The measure is part of an effort by city leaders to crack down on contractors working in the city without the proper licenses or construction permits. Council member Tom Finn cast the dissenting vote. Separately, council members unanimously passed a resolution supporting a referendum on the Penny for Pasco, a 1-cent infrastructure sales tax in Pasco. Proceeds from the sales tax must be used for construction of infrastructure, purchase of land or equipment. Currently, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties levy this tax. Last month, the Municipal Association of Pasco, which includes leaders from the county's six member governments, recommended that all governments support putting the measure on the ballot for the Nov. 2, 2004, presidential election. In other city business, council members unanimously agreed to give $3,275 to the Red Apple School, to help the nonprofit school for the mentally disabled pay for water service at its new site at 6640 Kentucky Ave. The city also agreed to extend by one year the lease for the school on city-owned property at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Marine Parkway. -- Jennifer Goldblatt covers business in Pasco County.
