TAMPA -- Mayor Dick Greco announced plans Thursday to turn prime city property in the Channel District into a complex of offices and homes.

Greco said he would sell 71/2 acres off Twiggs Street near Union Station to developers who commit to building a largely residential complex. He wants proposals submitted within two months.

For years, the city has used the land for a transportation and stormwater operations yard. But with the downtown neighborhood taking off for new development, Greco plans to move the operations yard to another site.

"We want people living in and around downtown," he said.

For this development, Greco is envisioning something like the apartments on Harbour Island.

With little time left before he leaves office in March, the mayor plans to move fast. He expects to send a signed development agreement to the City Council before his term ends.

Developers must submit detailed proposals, including a development plan for the entire property, by Feb. 7. They must make presentations to Greco's staff on Feb. 12.

Greco said he expects several proposals because grocery stores, drug companies and residential builders already have inquired about the site.
