Jays sign Sturtze to $1-million deal

ST. PETERSBURG -- Pitcher Tanyon Sturtze wasn't unemployed long, signing a $1-million contract with the Blue Jays on Saturday.

Sturtze, let go by the Rays on Friday, was told he will be the No. 3 starter in the Toronto rotation, pitching behind ex-Ray Cory Lidle.

"The best thing is that I'll get the ball every five days," Sturtze said. "I'm very happy with the way this worked out."

The Red Sox and Indians also called, but Sturtze chose Toronto, allowing him to be reunited with general manager J.P. Ricciardi, who drafted him in 1990.

Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar talked Saturday with representatives of several of the new free agents.

The Rays are looking for a veteran outfielder and may have interest in Jose Cruz, Shane Spencer and Eric Owens. They previously have been discussing Todd Hollandsworth and Alex Ochoa.

Other possibilities for the Rays could include utilitymen Desi Relaford (a former Mariner) and Frank Catalanotto, infielder Marlon Anderson and reliever Kerry Ligtenberg.

"We're just trying to decide at this point which two or three players we're going to earmark to go after," LaMar said.
