Site Seeing
By JULES ALLEN Feel free to browse Dance to a different beatThe depth of fan Web sites never ceases to amaze. Take running, for instance, the serious activity that includes changing out of your jeans and investing in very expensive shoes. Those ultra-light ones are perfect for a fast getaway after flicking sweat on some nonrunners blocking the sidewalk. This site is relentless in its devotion to the sport. Everything is here. You can choose from more than 425 titles of movies and videos that include some aspect of running. It includes obvious picks such as Marathon Man to highly specialized choices such as The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei that aren't in a video store near you. And I thought computer people were compulsive-obsessive. Gotcha!Getting ripped off is no fun, and unfortunately the Web makes it too easy to get scammed. I gave up selling my old gear online just about the time eBay came into favor. Back in the old days, one would post a description of the excess goodies to a mailing list and almost stand a good chance of knowing the buyer. So sending something expensive off in the mail and actually getting payment back wasn't that risky. When I contemplate stories like the one at this site, I really don't know how hard-core eBayers do their thing. Read this take of one man's efforts to get his purloined PowerBook back from a Chicago cashier's check counterfeiter. Monkey see, monkey landIt's been a while since I've found a really well-written Macromedia Flash game. But, clearly, all is not lost in browser land. I define a well-written game as one that's easy to play, quick to grasp, a fast download even for modem users, and mildly addictive. And this one has all of those properties and is certainly bookmark worthy. Fire up the game and crank up the speakers as the sounds really tie it all together. The idea is to simply guide your simian pilot through the air and grab all the fruit that's (somehow) hanging there. Once fully fruited up, land the spaceship on the newly visible landing pad. Sounds easy? Oh, just wait until you get a few levels in. Win Ben Stein's contemptForbes.com/free_forbes/2002/1223/225.html This one will get your thoughts flowing this Monday morning and maybe your blood pressure to boot. So, Republican, Democrat or Green Party, make sure your heart medication is within reach and type in the Web address. Former Nixon lawyer and speech writer Ben Stein takes on what he considers to be the other evils threatening the good old U.S. of A. And I think some of the comments are on the mark. Who can disagree with the remarks on education and the rife lack of personal responsibility that are celebrated on trashy TV? Oh, it gets better, but you'll have to read the juicy bits for yourself. Keep very still . . .At the birth of the photographic medium, subjects had to remain motionless for long periods for decent results. Having seen today's youth in high gear in many fine restaurants, I have to wonder what method our ancestors employed to keep the little ones still enough for a photo. But this site from the Library of Congress collects a treasure of what it calls those "fleeting moments of youth" captured over the years.
