'Hot' is no longer a drag for Curtis
Tony Curtis was in more than 100 movies, none more acclaimed than Some Like It Hot, the 1959 comedy in which he and Jack Lemmon impersonated female musicians in a band with Marilyn Monroe. Curtis, 77, hadn't been onstage since he started making movies in the 1940s until Some Like It Hot: The Musical, which is in the middle of a tour that arrives at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater on New Year's Eve. He plays Osgood Fielding III, the millionaire played by Joe E. Brown in the movie.
The musical by Peter Stone (book), Jule Styne (music) and Bob Merrill (lyrics) is adapted from a 1972 show called Sugar. It opens at 8 p.m. Tuesday and runs through Jan. 5. Tickets: $35-$55. (727) 791-7400 or www.rutheckerdhall.com.

Waltz into the new year
Vienna, Strauss waltzes and the new year go together. The tradition of Blue Danube Waltz, Radetzky March and other rollicking tunes played by the Vienna Philharmonic on New Year's Day has spawned "Salute to Vienna," a series of concerts around North America. There are two on Florida's west coast, featuring conductor Andras Deak, soprano Astrid Marie Lazar, tenor Zsolt Vadasz and dancers from Sarasota Ballet. They perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Tickets: $39-$55. (727) 791-7400. Then the production moves to Van Wezel Hall for a performance at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets: $39-$65. (941) 953-3368 or toll-free 1-800-826-9303.
Walter Cronkite hosts the New Year's day concert from Vienna's Musikverein, with Nikolaus Harnoncourt leading the Vienna Philharmonic, at 2:30 and 8 p.m. Wednesday on WEDU-Ch. 3.
