MONDAY

CASUAL GOLF: The Newcomers of Carrollwood & NW Hillsborough Club hosts casual golf each Monday, followed by lunch. Membership is open to residents new to Carrollwood or the northwest area. Call Kitty at 792-1055 for tee times and locations.

ONGOING EVENTS

KINDERMUSIK: The YMCA Express, 9878 W Linebaugh Ave., offers Kindermusik for newborns to 5-year-olds and their parents. Meredith Gornto, a licensed Kindermusik educator, will teach the classes that focus on the parent and child enjoying music and playing while contributing to the child's musical, physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. The cost varies according to child's age and program/facility membership. Facility costs range from $90 to $175, and program fees run $130 to $240 and include "at home" materials with each class. TAI CHI: Tai chi classes, taught by Yvette Gutierrez, are offered at the following locations: University Community Hospital-Carrollwood, 7171 N Dale Mabry Highway; UCH Health Source at University Mall on E Fowler Avenue; the New Tampa YMCA, 16221 Compton Drive in Tampa Palms; and Aston Garden, 12951 W Linebaugh Ave. in Westchase. ANIMAL HELPERS: St. Francis Society Animal Rescue, 2780 E Fowler Ave., is seeking volunteers to work in PetsMart Adoption Centers. Volunteer positions include foster home care, newsletter editor, budget coordinator and professional legal services. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. weekends and any time weekdays. St. Francis Society is an all-volunteer, nonprofit animal rescue organization. Call 948-0830.

CRISIS COUNSELORS: The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, 1 Crisis Center Plaza, off Bearss Avenue, is seeking volunteers to provide crisis counseling and community referrals. The center maintains a 24-hour hotline, and volunteers also counsel victims of sexual assault. The center provides a safe place to call "when life hurts." No experience necessary; training provided. BALLET, MANNERS CLASSES: The Center for the Arts Ballet School, 8401 W Hillsborough Ave., offers beginner to advanced ballet classes for anyone 3 and older. The school, sponsored by Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, also offers manners and etiquette classes. Call 887-1979.

SENIOR HELP WANTED: The Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services has a variety of volunteer positions for people 55 and older in its Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Positions include openings at American Red Cross at Town & Country Hospital and others in the northwest area. RSVP volunteers are covered by supplemental liability insurance and can receive limited travel and meal allowances. Call Jim at 272-5031.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICES: Tampa Bay Jewish Family Services seeks members of a new Jewish Single Parent Steering Committee, the Adult Program Committee, the Children's Program Committee, Marketing, Forms, Judaics, Volunteer and Social/Entertainment. A Jewish Single Parent Family Workshop Series will address issues faced by single-parent families. Call 960-1848.

SPANISH PERIODICALS SOUGHT: The University of South Florida Tampa Campus Library, 4202 E Fowler Ave., is seeking Spanish language periodicals published in Tampa. Copies of pre-1960s Ybor City/West Tampa periodicals are needed for loan to the library for digitization or photocopying. Through a grant funded by the Florida Humanities Council, the library is building a Tampa Latino Web site to preserve local Spanish culture. Weekly and monthly periodicals from the 1890s to 1950s depicted people in the Latino community at work and play. Call Maggie at 974-4591.

LOOKING AHEAD

CARROLLWOOD ROTARY: The Tampa Carrollwood Rotary Club will host its weekly luncheon meeting at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 3. Meetings are held at the Country Club of Carrollwood, 13903 Clubhouse Drive, off N Village Drive. Dr. Frank Mastandrea will talk about robotic surgery. Visitors interested in joining are welcome. SINGING TOTS: Free demonstrations of Music Together, a research-based music and movement program, will be presented by Singing Tots at 11 a.m. Jan. 3 and 4 at Club Tampa Palms, 16402 Tampa Palms Blvd. The classes, designed for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and their parents or caregivers, will consist of 10-week sessions. The winter session starts Jan. 10. Participating families will meet for 45 minutes for musicmaking, using their bodies as the main instrument (regardless of their music ability) as well as moving their bodies through space. MUSICAL LANGUAGE CLASSES: Musical Language, a division of Language Playhouse, is offering classes for infants to 4-year-olds. The foreign language music and movement classes will begin Jan. 6 at 4920 Newkirk Drive, No. 3. Registration is requested. For schedule call 964-8800.

SPANISH/FRENCH CLASSES: Conversational Spanish and French classes for adults will be offered at Language Playhouse, 4920 Newkirk Drive, No. 3, starting Jan. 6. Class size is limited to eight; reservations required. Call 964-8800.

SENIORS' DRAWING, PAINTING: Tim Gibbons will teach beginning drawing and painting classes from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays. The Winter Session I will be offered Jan. 7 through Feb. 7 at the Lutz Senior Citizens Center, 112 First Ave. NW. The five-week class is designed for students 60 and older. The cost is $35. A supply list will be provided on the first day of class. Call 231-2579.

MOFFITT INTERNS: The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia Drive, is accepting applications for its Summer Intern Program for the Advancement of Research. Applicants must be high school or college undergraduates seeking a career in science or medicine. Students attend weekly science seminars with graduate and postdoctoral fellows and will work 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. SPARK participants work under the direction and guidance of faculty and science mentors. Fifteen to 20 applicants will be chosen; the deadline for applications is Feb. 15. Selected applicants will be notified within two months. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Call 979-3887.

SENIORNET PROGRAM: The SeniorNet Program at the University of South Florida, 4202 E Fowler Ave., is taking registration for computer education courses for those over age 50. Classes will be offered from January through March. SeniorNet, a nonprofit organization, teaches computer fundamentals as well as advanced courses in software programs. Tuition is $75. Membership to SeniorNet is $40 and includes discounts on software, opportunities for social interaction and a subscription to Newsline, SeniorNet's quarterly newsletter.
