Lighthouse can help; so can you

Re: Lighthouse guides sightless to new lives, Dec. 15

Editor: As the former director of the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, I read with great interest. Yes, this nationally accredited agency does guide people to new lives after vision loss through extensive rehabilitation training, but as importantly, it also provides counseling and guidance of the very difficult process of adjusting to a visual loss.

The Pasco and Hernando communities are truly blessed to have this very competent and qualified resource within their midst. I encourage each and every person who lives in Pasco or Hernando counties to seek out the Lighthouse if you have been diagnosed with any eye condition that cannot be corrected by ordinary glasses; make a donation or include the Lighthouse in your will or estate planning. Most of the Lighthouse's programs are made possible only through donations, so please join me during this holiday season and make a gift to the Lighthouse. I promise that as soon as you do, you'll smile because you feel so good!

First and foremost, we are proud Americans

Re: Irish-Cherokee-American? No, just proud American, Dec. 18 letter

Editor: I would say the writer is absolutely correct.

For the reporters and politicians, the correct terminology should be "American of African descent" or "Polish descent" or "Arab descent," etc. if the ancestry must be included in an article or comment at all.

We are Americans first and not Afro-Americans, Arab-Americans, Polish-Americans, etc.

Proud to be an American.

Can county do something about rising cable rates?

Re: Time Warner cable

Editor: In the past four years, my bill has gone from $30.11 per month to the current $42.80 per month. A 5 percent increase will raise it to $44.90 per month. This amounts to a 50 percent increase in four years, which is excessive.

Expansion of Time Warner since taking over the cable service, and aiming at a monopoly has been achieved.

I have contacted Sen. Mike Fasano about this matter but his reply was the state can't do anything. Can our county commissioners do something? I would like to know.
-- George J. Mochen, New Port Richey

Who's responsible: state or county?

Re: New sales tax for Pasco County schools

Editor: The Dec. 19 article relating to a proposed sales tax increase for Pasco County to eliminate school crowding left me a little confused.

If I am not mistaken the voters of this state just approved a constitutional amendment requiring the state of Florida to reduce class size and giving state government the responsibility to find the resources to make it happen. If that is the case, why would Pasco County have to produce extra revenue to do what the state is already mandated to do?

Developers' influence is not much of a surprise

Re: County cuts tree planting demand, Dec. 20

Editor: Of course the county did what the developers told them to do! Frankly, I don't know why we even bother holding elections; just let the developers appoint whoever will kowtow to them the most. That's pretty much the result anyway, and we'd save plenty on taxes that could be used for something else -- maybe a school or two?

Naw, we can't have voters that might be smart enough to see what the developers are doing to the county.
