Places for pooches
© St. Petersburg Times SEMINOLE -- The past year has been good to south Pinellas dogs: Four new dog parks have opened. Three are in St. Petersburg: Lake Vista, 1401 62nd Ave. S; North Shore Park behind the softball field at North Shore Drive and Ninth Avenue NE; and Walter Fuller Park, 7883 26th Ave. N, near the Devil Rays clubhouse. Dog runs at Coquina Key Park and Crescent Lake Park opened in 2001. In Seminole, the Paw Playground at Boca Ciega Millennium Park, 12410 74th Ave. N, joins two other Pinellas County dog parks: in Fort De Soto Park at Pinellas' southern tip and at Anderson Park in Tarpon Springs. A place for pooches will open next year at Walsingham Park, near Seminole between 102nd Avenue N and Walsingham Road. Dog parks have rules. Owners are asked to pick up after their pets; dispensers with plastic baggies are provided. Dogs have to be vaccinated and well-behaved. But not all dogs are. At Boca Ciega Millennium Park last month, a mixed breed black Labrador bit Celeste Moore in the left arm. The Labrador was four months behind on its rabies shots, but county officials said Moore did not need rabies shots because the dog did not show signs of the disease. "It's a really good concept if everyone would use their head," Moore said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
