Takeya Brown, 10, gets extensions attached to her hair by a friend, Ashley Strickland, 13, at the Paradise Apartments in April 2001. The jumbo silky bag of hair is imported from Korea and costs 59 cents from the convenience store across from the Paradise Apartments. The straight hair is braided into Browns real hair, then burned on the ends to secure the braid. The process takes between four and six hours and lasts up to two weeks before the braids have to be burned again.
