SEC DISCLOSURE PROPOSALS: The Securities and Exchange Commission announced a series of actions designed to force corporations to disclose far more financial information, as the agency responded to criticisms that lax rules and oversight allowed Enron Corp. to hide its condition from investors. The SEC proposed rules would expand the type of information that must be reported by corporations, force them to report more promptly and require that many SEC filings be posted on the Internet. SEC chairman Harvey Pitt said the proposals were the first in a series of reforms that would later include further changes in financial reporting and disclosure requirements, accounting standard setting, regulation of the auditing process and corporate governance.
