JERUSALEM -- Yasser Arafat ignored President Bush's call for a new Palestinian leadership but welcomed his Mideast policy speech Monday as a "serious effort to push the peace process forward."

KABUL, Afghanistan -- President Hamid Karzai appointed a new Cabinet on Monday but left out popular women's activist Sima Samar, who was not reappointed to her job as minister for women's affairs and faces death threats.

Sharon vows to expand offensive into Gaza Strip
RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Israeli forces clamped down harder on the West Bank on Monday as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon pledged to widen his military offensive against Palestinian extremists to the Gaza Strip, where a helicopter strike killed four Hamas members.
