John Lynch is on his third coach and second uniform, but remains with his only pro team.

NFL
Around the AFC
BENGALS: Linebacker Canute Curtis agreed to a two-year contract extension. Curtis, signed as a free agent from West Virginia in 1998, started the last four games at outside linebacker last season after Steve Foley strained his back. He had been mainly a special teams player. Foley dislocated his shoulder in the final preseason game and is out for the season, giving Curtis a chance to start. He is in the final year of a three-year deal, so the extension will run through 2004.

Around the NFC
COWBOYS: Left tackle Flozell Adams has started 53 consecutive games, the longest streak on the club. He expects the streak to remain intact. Adams, who has a sprained knee, said he will start Sunday against Houston. "I have no doubts that I'll be out there," Adams said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.Y. -- This is no ordinary season opener for the NFL.

Baseball

PHOENIX -- When things are going badly, it's nice to give the ball to one of the best pitchers in the game.

Injury hounds Montgomerie
It just wouldn't be the same without him. Colin Montgomerie is hurting, an aching back the culprit. The injury is severe enough that Europe's most irascible player might skip the Ryder Cup this month. Even the most ardent of flag-waving Americans wouldn't want to see that.
