USF OPENS TECHNOLOGY CENTER: The University of South Florida's College of Marine Science opened its USF MEMS and Nanotechnology center at the Young-Rainey STAR Center in Largo Friday. The facility, which includes a 5,000-square-foot clean room, will be used for research, development and limited production of microelectromechanical devices, which combine mechanical, fluid, optical and electronic functions on a chip smaller than a dime and thinner than a human hair. USF is inviting local manufacturers to visit the center to explore the possibility of incorporating MEMS technology into their products. The new center was built using a $15-million contract from the U.S. Army, which has ordered MEMS devices that will function as chemical and biological sensors.
