Editorial: A strategic smallpox plan
President Bush's smallpox vaccination plan is an important defense against bioterror. The prospect of terrorists unleashing the deadly virus is no longer unthinkable, and the people most vulnerable to attack need to be prepared. The president deserves credit for moving swiftly, and for taking a balanced approach to an initiative that carries tremendous risks.

Beyond dissent: the limits of faculty freedom
Most of what has been written about the University of South Florida's efforts to fire Sami Al-Arian, an associate professor of engineering, would lead one to conclude that the administration is out to punish him only because of what he has called his "unpopular" views. Al-Arian has repeated: "This case is indeed about academic freedom and freedom of speech."
