Terry Tomalin: Proving her worth in the great outdoors
Julie Jones knew she was in trouble.

Some fish harder to find than others
Cool water temperatures put grouper, sheepshead and trout on the list of fish you will want to target this time of year.

The First Fish

A father and son adventure doesn't turn out quite as expected, but a face-to-face encounter with a fish named "Baxter" turns the tide.

Daily fishing report: Grouper are here, hungry
December finally has brought a modest number of gag grouper to many of our rock piles. All depths are producing fish -- with greater numbers at the 40- to 60-foot mark. Even though water temperatures have plummeted, the grouper still possess a decent appetite. The coldest water has not reached the bottom. When it does, appetites will halt.

Snook season about to close
A reminder that Saturday is the last day to catch and keep snook. Snook season closes Sunday and remains closed until Feb. 1. During the closed season, it is illegal to possess snook of any size. During the open season, it is legal to keep snook 26 to 34 inches, one per person per day.

Boat on water 'Fishability'
Local builders have combined old-fashioned quality with 21st-century materials to create a boat that can cruise shallow, deep and everywhere in between. Story

Snook closure
Snook season closes Dec. 15, which means there only are a few days remaining to catch and keep the popular game fish. The closed season runs through Jan. 31, statewide. During the closed period, it is illegal to possess snook of any size. When the season is open, only snook between 26 and 34 inches may be kept, and the bag limit is one snook per person, per boat.

Freshwater fishing heats up in chilly December
December marks the start of the freshwater fishing season. My log book and field notes reveal the first trophy fish (10 pounds and above) are caught during this month.

December forecast
December is a month of transition in the Tampa Bay area. The fall migrations of kingfish, Spanish mackerel and cobia typically wind down and the winter pattern establishes itself. Weather plays the key role in determining how good the fishing will be and what species will be available.
