Withlacoochee River to rise gradually after heavy rains

Officials received no reports of predicted coastal flooding, despite heavy rains that dumped from 1 to 3 inches on Hernando County late Tuesday into Wednesday.

The rains did put an end to the ebb of the Withlacoochee River at Trilby and Croom, though, according to the National Weather Service at Ruskin. The Withlacoochee is slow to respond to the rains, meteorologist Eric Oglesby said.

The river will rise gradually through Saturday, when it crests, he said. The problem will be worse at Trilby, where the water is expected to rise another foot -- to moderate flood stage -- before receding. "It's supposed to rise to 14.2 feet," Oglesby said. "Some homes get isolated at that point." The river at Trilby already was at 13.3 feet early Wednesday. Flooding was reported on River Road, and some homes on Cercelia Road and Wood River Court were reported as isolated. "We're not going to see too much of a response at Croom. It should rise another 0.4 feet," Oglesby said. Little rain is forecast for the next week.

There is a 30 percent chance of light showers for tonight, Oglesby said.
